What is SSMAT Turfing?
SSES SSMAT Turfing is a natural, eco-friendly erosion control solution that involves covering exposed soil surfaces with healthy grass turf to create an immediate protective layer. This green cover shields slopes from the impact of rain, wind, and surface runoff, reducing soil displacement and promoting long-term stability.
As the roots establish and bind with the soil, SSMAT turfing forms a strong, vegetated surface that offers significantly higher resistance to erosion than bare soil. It is an effective and sustainable method for stabilizing mild to moderate slopes while enhancing the landscape both aesthetically and environmentally.
Polymeric SSMAT Turfing
Polymeric SSMAT turfing is an advanced variation of traditional SSMAT turfing that incorporates synthetic, polymer-based mats to provide immediate erosion protection while supporting natural vegetation growth. These polymeric mats are durable, lightweight, and resistant to environmental degradation.
When combined with natural turf or seed, polymeric SSMAT turfing enhances slope stability by reinforcing the soil surface during the critical early stages of vegetation establishment. Over time, the vegetation integrates with the polymeric structure, forming a resilient and long-lasting erosion control system.

How it works?
- Initial protection: The synthetic SSMAT turfing is laid over the soil to provide an immediate barrier against erosion from wind and rainfall.
- Vegetation growth: The open, three-dimensional structure of the mat allows vegetation to grow through it, establishing a root system that anchors the soil.
- Long-term stabilization: Once vegetation is established, it provides a permanent, natural erosion control solution. The root systems and the SSMAT turfing work together to create a stable, green surface.
- Reinforcement: With other SSES products like SSGRID, double-twist steel mesh is integrated with the SSMAT turfing to provide high tensile strength and resistance to rupture on steep slopes or in high-flow channels. This reinforcement works with the SSMAT turfing and soil to create a very robust erosion control system.
